It takes all kinds to make a point
Joy complained that her boss did other things as she spoke to him. Eventually she realized why – he had a fast pace and she had a slow one, so he figured if he was going to have to listen to her ramble, he might as well get something done. When Joy started speaking succinctly, her boss gave her his full attention.

Carla shared a story about a quiet and detail-oriented coworker. She thought his life must be very boring, so she took it upon herself…to liven it up. The more she tried to connect with him, the more irritated he became. Frustrated, she asked him one day, “What do you want from me?” He answered, “I want you to leave me alone.” It hit Carla that they had a style clash. She dialed her interaction with her coworker way down and the interaction they did have became harmonious.

Barbara confessed that her employees would leave her feedback sessions in tears - until she added a simple personal acknowledgement to her interaction. She balanced her all-business style with a personal touch and got the job done.

Joe noticed his clients’ eyes glazing over when he reported his research findings. He learned to summarize his conclusions and leave out the details that fascinated him but bored his clients.
